MOVING WITH PAIN

Private Pilates With Back Pain Near Ann Arbor

If movement itself has started to feel risky, you may want someone’s full attention on how your body responds, not a room to keep pace with. Here’s how Carly works one on one, at True Form’s studio in Saline, with people who come in with back pain, and what she can’t do.

Considering Pilates when you have back pain

You may have tried something already: chiropractic care, physical therapy, or nothing yet beyond hearing that Pilates might help.

The worry may not be the pain itself so much as the movement, and whether it will make things worse. That fear is reasonable, and it shapes how Carly starts.

How private Pilates sessions adapt to your body

Carly progresses slowly and individualizes the work. The aim is to build confidence with movement without overdoing it, and to adjust the apparatus and exercises to what your body needs that day. The full classical apparatus helps here: springs can support a movement as easily as they can load it.

Every session is private, duet or trio, so her attention stays on you instead of on keeping a group moving. If pain is the main reason you’re coming, start private.

What to expect at your first Pilates session

Before you arrive, you’ll complete a short health questionnaire. In the session, Carly talks through your health history, including surgeries and conditions, then uses simple movements to see how you move and respond before building anything. She checks in as you go, so tell her straight away if something doesn’t feel right.

Afterward, she tells you what she noticed and what future sessions would focus on. If you continue, she’ll suggest a realistic rhythm.

What clients with back pain have experienced

Over 13 years of teaching Pilates, Carly has seen some clients experience reduced pain, more mobility and more confidence, return to activities they had been avoiding, and feel ready to add other helpful activities. Results vary, and none of that is a promise.

One client began afraid that every unfamiliar sensation meant something was wrong. After working individually with Carly twice a week for a year, she became less fearful of movement, found her body could do more than she expected, and gained strength and mobility she notices in daily life. Her experience is hers; it doesn’t mean new or unexplained pain should be ignored.

Pilates instruction does not replace medical care

It isn’t medical treatment, and it doesn’t replace your doctor, physical therapist or chiropractor. Carly doesn’t diagnose. Nobody can promise what Pilates will do for your pain.

If you can’t do suggested movements comfortably, Carly may recommend sticking to private sessions or going back to a physical therapist first. With your permission, she can talk with your PT if she needs clarification. If you’re finishing physical therapy now, see Pilates after physical therapy. If you’ve been told you have sciatica, read Pilates and sciatica before booking.

“She is incredibly responsive to the individual in front of her and tailors the workout to meet individual needs.”

Will Pilates fix my back pain?

Nobody can promise that. Some clients have experienced less pain, more mobility and more confidence moving, but results vary and Pilates is not medical treatment.

Should I talk to my doctor first?

Recent surgery needs medical clearance. If your pain hasn't been assessed, or you're unsure whether exercise is right for you now, check with your doctor or physical therapist and contact Carly before booking.
